Anand in lead

CHENNAI, AUG. 23. World's top chess player Viswanathan Anand is leading in `The Challenge' rapid chess tournament by 1.5 points at Sao Paulo in Brazil on Sunday.

In a category 16 pool competing a six-player double round robin rapid chess (25+10) tournament, Anand is leading the five-day contest with three draws and three victories in the first six rounds. Four rounds remain to be played. Other Grandmasters from the region are left far behind on three points. Former World champion Anatoly Karpov of Russia is in fifth place.

Anand won all three white games and most of them were miniature victories against Vescovi, Milos and Morovic.

He drew the three black games against Morovic, Karpov and Leitao. Each player takes on the opponent twice in the tournament, once with white and once with black.

The event will conclude at the venue Morumbi Hilton on Tuesday after the tenth and final round.
