SBI wins maiden title

CHENNAI, AUG. 23. State Bank of India edged AG's Office 5-2 via the tie-breaker to register its maiden triumph in the Champion Club football tournament at the HVF-Ajeya stadium in Avadi on Monday. The teams were level 2-2 at the end of extra-time.

A team of guest players, mostly juniors, and brought together into a strong unit by former players C.M. Ranjit and Ricky Brown, SBI had many sit up even in the CFA league. But today's achievement went one rung further. Leading with Basheer's goal in the 34 the minute, SBI failed to cling on to that till the end, Pugazendhi scoring the equaliser in the 77th minute.

A seasoned outfit, AG's team forced the issue into extra-time, where again SBI went ahead first through Gowrishankar, only to have Rajmohan equalise almost at the last minute. In the tie- breaker, Senthil Kumar, Shanthakumar and Vimal Raj scored for SBI where none could convert for AG's, thanks to some brilliant work by substitute goalkeeper Kareem. — Our SpecialCorrespondent
