KATHMANDU, AUG. 23. Hundreds of truckers in Nepal today entered Kathmandu defying the Maoists' blockade, even as the government urged the rebels to end their stir and start peace talks. Joint teams of security forces under the unified command of the Royal Nepalese Army were deployed along the highways to counter the Maoist threat, a military official said. Altogether 138 vehicles entered Kathmandu from Nagdhunga pass in the Tribhuvan Highway and 336 left the capital till 4 p.m. today, on the sixth day of the Maoist economic blockade, the Army said. The number of buses and trucks moving to and from the highways has also increased. The Prime Minister, Sher Bahadur Deuba, today urged the rebels to end their blockade as also their agitation against the Indian business houses and other multinationals.
