Pondicherry
By Our Staff Reporter
PONDICHERRY, AUG. 23. The Pondicherry unit of the Patali Makkal Katchi (PMK) volunteers today courted arrest after they staged a picketing at various points, protesting against the arrest of the party founder, S. Ramadoss, and others at Tindivanam. The party organiser, N.G. Panneerselvam, along with a number of activists, was held at Indira Gandhi statue on Ellaipillaichavady road for picketing on the thoroughfare. Our Vellore Staff Reporter reports: The PMK volunteers, including 80 women, were arrested when they attempted to lock the Indian Made Foreign Liquor (IMFL) shops run by the State-owned Tamil Nadu State Marketing Corporation (TASMAC) in four places in Vellore district. It was part of a State-wide agitation by the party's women's wing demanding closure of the shops on the grounds that they encouraged consumption of liquor, which resulted in the economic ruin of poor families. The arrests were made at Valluvambakkam, Kavanur, Thamalerimuthur and Arakkonam. The agitators locked the shops in Perungalathur, Mosur, Pappangulam and Kadai Theru (Arakkonam town), all in Arakkonam taluk. A total of 1,400 volunteers, including 800 women, staged demonstrations in 28 places in the district. All the arrested persons were later released. In Tiruvannamalai district, P. Harikrishnan, party functionary and president of Agarakorakottai village panchayat and 111 women belonging to the PMK women's wing were arrested when they attempted to lock IMFL shops in Doosi, Sanikkavadi, Keezhpennathur and Nadukuppam.
