ONGOLE, AUG. 23. A house under Indira Awas Yojana for the family of a former Chief Minister? It may sound incredible but true. Touched by the plight of Annapurnamma, daughter-in-law of the first Chief Minister of Andhra, Tanguturi Prakasam Pantulu, who has been living in a rented house under pathetic conditions, the Collector, B. Udaya Lakshmi, sanctioned her a house under the yojana. Mrs. Lakshmi made this announcement while participating in the 132nd birth anniversary celebrations of Prakasam Pantulu held at the Collectorate today.
Flood of donations
Taking the cue, the Zilla Parishad Chairman, Mukku Kasi Reddy, announced a donation of Rs. 20,000, the former Minister, Damancharla Anjaneyulu, gave Rs. 20,000 and the Ongole Municipal Chairman, Y. Tulasi Rao, Rs. 10,000. The Deputy Executive Engineer (Information) came forward to meet the entire cost of providing electricity to the house. Mrs. Lakshmi said that she had read about the travails of Mrs. Annapurnamma published in local newspapers on the eve of birth anniversary. She said Prakasam Pantulu had given up his lucrative practice as lawyer in Madras (now Chennai) and sold away property worth crores of rupees for the cause of freedom struggle. Prakasam district was carved out of backward areas of Guntur, Nellore and Kurnool districts and named after Prakasam who was born at Vinodarayanipalem, near here.
