CHANDIGARH, AUG. 23. Realising that the groundwater-level was declining in Punjab and Haryana, a session on 'Rainwater Harvesting and Artificial Recharge to Ground Water' here today resolved that there was an urgent need to harvest the rainwater. Central Ground Water Board Chandigarh Regional Director V M Sikka in his keynote address, said the ground water in the country's northwest region, including Punjab and Haryana, was depleting at an alarming rate. The session, organised by the Chandigarh Council of the Confederation of Indian Industry, was a part of the CII Green School Project, a sustainable initiative to sensitise school teachers, who could in turn could educate youth in the areas of environment. The Green School Project 2004-05 is supported by Mahindra and Mahindra as principal sponsor and Indian Oil Corporation Ltd. as co-sponsor. Mr Sikka requested teachers to educate their school children about the subject. He also urged them to take up construction of a recharge structure within the premises of their school under the guidance of Central Ground Water Board, North Western Region. During the workshop, Dr D S Saini, Director, Central Ground Water Board (North Western Region) director D S Saini also presented the results of experimental studies carried out in Punjab and Chandigarh. He emphasised the need for artificial recharge to augment the fresh water resources, which he informed, are becoming scarce every year due to falling water levels and deterioration of ground water quality of discharging untreated effluents and sewage waste. Over 100 teachers from different schools came for the session to learn various techniques available for ground water recharge.
