SHIMLA, AUG.23. The crisis management group set up in the wake of flash floods in the Sutlej undertook a fresh review of the situation here today. The committee, headed by the State Chief Secretary, Shamsher Singh, took stock of the situation in the wake of formation of artificial lake on the Pareechu river. It also reviewed these arrangements in the light of instructions received from the Union Government, the Ministry of Home Affairs and the National Disaster Management Division on Saturday. The Centre has intimated that the expected level of rise in water in case of any eventuality would be above 13 metres at Lapcha and Samdoh, above 10 metres at Khab and Nathpa and above 7 metres at Jhakri and Rampur. While discussing all aspects of the water rise at all these places, it was decided that the local administration might be directed to take stock of the situation so as to avoid any loss to the life and property. A Government spokesman said that the Ministry of Home Affairs has directed that the arrangements such as setting up of control room, wireless communication, broadcast of warnings, setting up of help lines should be strengthened and safer zones marked and voluntary teams be set up so that on receipt of early warning people could be evacuated to safer places. The Centre has further said that the Army and the Disaster Management team of the ITBP would continue to be on alert. After reviewing all the arrangements, the Chief Secretary expressed satisfaction and directed that as per directions of the Government of India all arrangements would be strengthened further and alertness would be maintained by the Crisis Management Group at the State Headquarters as well as in the field to overcome any untoward situation. Meanwhile, the water level in the Spiti river at Samdoh and the Sutlej was normal today according to information reaching at State Headquarters.
