Vijayawada

VIJAYAWADA, AUG. 23. The row over alleged misbehaviour of the Congress MLA, Vangaveeti Radhakrishna, with a Transport Department official seems to dissipate as officials and employees of the department are understood to have decided to resume normal duty from Tuesday. However, employees observed a pen down strike on Monday to register protest against the MLA's behaviour.
Protest registered
"We have registered a protest and the authorities concerned at the State level responded favourably. We do not want to cause inconvenience to people by prolonging our protest," the Deputy Transport Commissioner, S.A.V. Prasada Rao, said. Employees demanded the arrest of Mr. Radhakrishna who reportedly threatened officials with dire consequences if his instructions were not implemented. They were sore that the police did not register an `attempt to murder' case against the MLA as demanded by the Deputy Transport Commissioner. The police, treating the matter as sensitive, registered a case against Mr. Radhakrishna for obstructing officials from performing their duties. The fracas began with a statement made by the Transport Minister, S. Santosh Reddy, during his recent visit to the city that the Government was actively considering reintroduction of the authorised agents system in RTA offices. The official communication was, however, not issued so far. But, taking a cue from the Minister's statement and his personal interaction on the issue later, the MLA wanted officials to permit the agents to carry out their transactions. With officials refusing to concede the demand pending an official communication, the matter precipitated into the major issue.
