NEW DELHI, AUG. 23. Directing the Chief Fire Officer to ensure proper fire safety measures in the Capital's high-rise buildings in urban as well as rural areas, the Delhi High Court today disallowed an application by BSES Rajdhani Power Ltd. seeking permission to give power connections to uncertified buildings in "Lal Dora" and extended Lal Dora (urbanised villages) in South-West Delhi. The power supply company had sought certain clarifications on a 2003 judgment of the High Court whereby it had directed the Delhi Government, the Delhi Fire Service, the New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC) and the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) to further tighten the implementation of fire safety measures in the Capital's high-rise buildings. The plea of the power supply company was that the 2003 judgment was silent on provision of fire safety measures in the buildings built in these villages, therefore, it should be allowed to give power connection to the residents there, otherwise, they would use generators or resort to power theft causing loss to the exchequer. However, the Bench rejected its plea and directed the Chief Fire Officer of Delhi and the other government agencies concerned to ensure the mandatory fire measures in these buildings as well.
