BANGALORE, AUG. 24. Axalto, a French smart card maker, owned by the U.S. based oil field services multinational company, Schlumberger, plans to launch SIM (Subscriber Identification Module) cards in India for both GSM and CDMA-based handsets, the firm's President for Asian business, Tan Teck Lee, told reporters here on Tuesday. Axalto, which also sells point-of-sale terminals was talking to mobile service providers to introduce its SIM cards that supported "corporate applications," Mr. Lee said. There were some 30 million smart card subscribers at the end of June. The market was expected to grow by nearly 40 per cent over the next few years. Mr. Tan also announced that Axalto would organise SIMagine, a worldwide GSM and java card developer contest for future wireless applications in Bangalore on September 7 and 8. The next day would see the eGate Open contest to develop secure e-business applications for USB smart cards, he added. The firm employed some 50 people in Bangalore, Delhi and Mumbai, including a technical team of 25 in Bangalore.
