Airtel cuts tariffs

By Our Special Correspondent

NEW DELHI, AUG. 24. Airtel has announced a reduction in tariffs for its mobile services in what appears to be bid to capture a large segment of the cellular telephone market.

Local call rates for Airtel pre-paid subscribers to other Airtel mobiles have been slashed to Re. 1 a minute and its customers can call any other Airtel mobile for Rs. 2 a minute (which is a reduction of 30 per cent of the existing tariff) and is lower than the charges for STD calls from fixed telephone lines.

A release issued by Airtel said that the company had also reduced local call tariffs from Airtel mobiles to fixed lines and to any other mobiles (including non-Airtel mobiles) by 25 per cent. To encourage long distance STD calls a uniform rate of Rs. 3.25 a minute would be charged, irrespective of the distance involved, for calls made to any fixed line by an Airtel subscriber.

The new tariffs would apply to new and old subscribers on payment of a one-time plan entry fee of Rs. 50, the President Mobility of Bharti Cellular, Manoj Kohli, said. This charge would be waived for new customers till September 30.
