Weightlifting coaches sacked

NEW DELHI, AUG. 24. The Union Government has "terminated the services" of the weightlifting chief coach, Pal Singh Sandhu, stating that it had lost confidence in him following the recent doping violations by two Indian lifters at the Athens Olympics.

The Government has also terminated the contract of Leonid Taranenko of Belarus, the foreign coach who was in charge of the team's preparations for the Olympics. Both the coaches were accused of having given unspecified injections by one of the lifters charged with doping in Athens, Pratima Kumari.

Taranenko's contract was due to expire on August 31. "It was not that we took the decision to terminate his contract since it was ending anyway at the end of this month. We wanted to send a message across,'' said a ministry spokesman on Tuesday.

Sandhu, a Dronacharya awardee, is not a Government employee, but earns a salary of Rs 15,000 per month from the Government since he is the chief coach. — Our Special Correspondent
