Pondicherry
By S. Nadarajan
PONDICHERRY, AUG. 24. The traffic wing of the Pondicherry police plans to crack down on overloading in vehicles, especially those carrying school children. The Superintendent of Police (Traffic wing), G. Vijayasundaram, told newsmen here on Monday that there were complaints that schoolchildren were being packed like sardines in autorickshaws and in spite of persuasion that the autorickshaw drivers should desist from carrying too many children the scenario continued causing concern to the parents and road users. He said the drive against overloading would be launched soon; police would talk to parents to enlist their cooperation. Mr. Vijayasundaram said there was also a plan to prevent footboard travel in tempos and passenger buses.
Manpower shortage
The management of traffic has become a challenging task, with the traffic wing short of manpower. Pondicherry now has three lakh two-wheelers (motorcycles and scooters) and four lakh cycles. The number of buses is 2,472; there are also 8,275 lorries and other types of cargo vehicles operating in Pondicherry. Forty-eight fatal accidents have occurred during the last eight months while the corresponding figure for last year was 37.
