Constable nabs fleeing criminal

By Our Staff Reporter

NEW DELHI, AUG. 24. In a display of alertness and presence of mind, a Delhi Police constable nabbed the alleged killer of a businessman while he was trying to flee after committing the crime at Naraina in South-West Delhi over the week-end.

According to the police, Constables Subhash Chand and Prakash Chand were patrolling the area near Z-Block in Loha Mandi on Saturday. Around 7-30 p.m., they heard a gunshot near a railway line and rushed to the spot. They noticed four men fleeing. One of them was carrying a bag. The man who had been shot at had collapsed on the ground.

Prakash began chasing three of them, who were fleeing in one direction, while Subhash concentrated on the man fleeing with the bag which contained Rs. 10,000 and some blank cheques. The suspect threatened to fire, but Subhash kept chasing him. After going some distance, Subhash noticed two more Delhi police personnel, both named Surinder, and alerted them. Subhash managed to overpower the suspect and recover the looted property.

Meanwhile, the injured man, later identified as Rajesh Jain, a resident of New Shakti Nagar in North-West Delhi, was rushed to Kapoor Medical Centre in Naraina Vihar where he was declared dead on arrival.

The arrested man was identified as Babu Singh alias Nohre Singh, a resident of Basti, Uttar Pradesh. His associates, who had managed to flee taking advantage of the confusion, have been identified as Babloo Jaiswal, Budhai and Arjun. Interrogation of the accused revealed that Rajesh was a commission agent working in Loha Mandi for the past couple of years and often used to carry huge amounts of cash.

Arjun, who had been working in the mandi for the past two years, had been keeping track of Rajesh's movement for some time. Aware that Rajesh used to carry huge amounts of cash, Arjun decided to rope in his associates from U.P. and rob him.

As per plan, Babu -- an alleged bad character of Chawani police station in Basti -- and two others, Babloo and Budhai, procured a country-made weapon from U.P. and came to the Capital. They stayed in the house of another acquaintance, Dinesh, in Nangloi. On August 20, Arjun took his associates to the mandi and briefed them about the target. Following the incident, the names of the constables have been recommended for awards. Further investigations in the case are on to trace and arrest the absconding accused.
