Three more cases of 'mysterious fever'

SHIMLA, AUG. 24. Three more people with a mysterious fever, suspected to be scrub typhus, were admitted to Indira Gandhi Medical College hospital here raising the total number of such cases to 42.

Prof L S Pal, Principal, IGMC said so far only 15 cases had been confirmed as scrub typhus. He said blood samples of seven other patients had also been sent for test and the report was likely to be received by tomorrow.

Two patients have died here due to the mysterious fever, which was suspected to be scrub typhus, but could not be confirmed as their condition was too critical to conduct the 'weil felix' test when they were brought to the hospital.

Pal said there was no cause for alarm as the patients were responding to anti-biotic treatment. At present 20 cases were under treatment and some of the patients had been discharged after treatment.

A similar oubreak of scrub typhus had claimed 25 lives last year and the health department was on alert this time.

An official spokesman said here today that there was no need of panic as the cases of scrub typhus being reported from some parts of the state was curable and non-communicable.

The state has been witnessing cases of similar fever for the last three-four years during rainy season or just after it and the government was fully prepared to meet any eventuality, he said.

He said keeping in view the recurrence of this fever, the state government has decided to regularly monitor the cases from various parts of the state and a cell had been created in directorate of health to monitor the situation.
