MUMBAI, AUG. 24. Social activist Anna Hazare today sought a stay on the trial of a defamation case filed by the Maharashtra Food and Civil Supplies Minister, Sureshdada Jain, against him besides seeking exemption from day-to-day court proceedings. Appearing before a Metropolitan Magistrate who had issued a non-bailable warrant against the activist on July 28, Mr. Hazare said the proceedings regarding his allegations against the Ministers were continuing before the Sawant Commission and urged the court to stay the trial. Mr. Jain's counsel, however, opposed the plea for the stay on trial, saying a judicial process could not be stayed under such circumstances. The court has now kept the matter for hearing on September 10. Mr. Hazare had made some statements against Mr. Jain last year against which the Minister had filed a criminal complaint.
