PATHANAMTHITTA, AUG. 24. The Major Irrigation Department has launched a Rs. four lakhs project to remove the sandbanks in the racecourse of the Uthrittathi Vallamkali in river Pampa at Aranmula. An earthmover is being pressed into service to remove the sandbanks and the mission is likely to be completed in the next two days, according to official sources. The project is aimed at clearing the hurdles in the racecourse extending from the Parappuzha kadavu to Anilimoottil kadavu so as to ensure the smooth conduct of the annual boat race and pageantry.
Repair works
Meanwhile, the Department has also launched the repair works on the viewers' gallery at the Sathram kadavu in view of the annual snakeboat pageantry. The repair works, estimated at Rs 3.5 lakhs, would also be completed in the next few days.
Trial run begins
Meanwhile, the authorities of the Pampa Irrigation Project have started releasing water from the PIP barrage at Maniyar today as a trial run to ensure sufficient water level in the racecourse for the boat race to be held on September 1. A team of officials led by the local MLA, Malethu Saraladevi, will inspect the water level in the racecourse tomorrow, according to official sources.
