Let's not rock the boat, says Pakistan

By B. Muralidhar Reddy

ISLAMABAD, AUG. 24. Pakistan today accused the Union Home Ministry of having "cooked-up figures" on cross-border infiltration and counselled the Congress against entertaining any "second thoughts" on the India-Pakistan peace process.

The Pakistan Foreign Office spokesman, Masood Khan, however, insisted that the peace process was on course.

The recent Congress resolution, while harping on the "oft-repeated allegations of infiltration, has blacked out the human rights violations and gross atrocities" in Kashmir, he said. Composite dialogue He said the Prime Minister, Manmohan Singh, and the Congress president, Sonia Gandhi, demonstrated good faith and pledged to continue the composite dialogue process. The AICC should not have second thoughts on the talks process, which was in the interest of the people of Kashmir and the international community. "The Indian leaders should change their mindset and adjust to the realities. Let us take the talks to the logical end and not muddy the waters before the meeting of the two Foreign Ministers," he said.

To a question on the progress of the first round of composite dialogue, Mr. Khan said the two countries had come a long way since their forces were arrayed against each other. "We have our differences, but we are engaging each other ... we should not try to rock the boat," he said. "Let us keep giving clear signals that we are committed to [a] result-oriented composite dialogue process for a durable peace in the region."
