THIRUVANANTHAPURAM, AUG. 24. The CPI(M) State secretary, Pinarayi Vijayan, has condemned the Government's failure to utilise the funds sanctioned by the Centre for SC/ST students. In a statement here today, Mr. Vijayan said the SC/ST Welfare Department had wasted Rs. 13 crores sanctioned by the Centre for the purpose at a time when SC/ST students were stru ggling to meet their educational expenses. He sought an inquiry into the lapse after removing the Minister for the Welfare of Scheduled and Backward Communities, M.A. Kuttappan, from office. Citing the reply given by the Union Social Welfare Minister, Meera Kumar, in this regard, he said while there was confirmation about non-utilisation of Rs. 13 crores sanctioned between 2001-'04, there was no certainty whether the same had happened in the case of funds sanctioned this financial year.
