THIRUVANANTHAPURAM, AUG. 24. Banking operations in the State were affected owing to the token strike called by the United Forum of Bank Unions, an umbrella organisation of bank employees unions and officers associations. The nation-wide strike was called in support of the UFBU's demand for wage revision in the banking industry. Employees in the Reserve Bank of India offices in Kochi and Thiruvananthapuram too expressed solidarity by joining the strike and staging a demonstration in front of the respective offices. Clearing house operations did not take place on account of the strike. A majority of the banks remained closed. However, ATMs were functional, as they were not covered by the strike call. The association organising secretary, Jacob Mathew, said the strike was total in the State. He said employees and officers had to take on additional work load as more than one lakh employees hand been sent out of the industry following the implementation of the voluntary retirement scheme. It was in this context that the demand for wage revision was placed before the Indian Banks Association, the apex body of the banks. The Reserve Bank Employees Association secretary, Thomas Joseph, said that clearing-house operations in the RBI offices in Kochi and Thiruvananthapuram came to a halt owing to the strike by the RBI employees.
