Thrissur
By Our Staff Reporter
THRISSUR, AUG. 24. The State Human Rights Commission (SHRC) chairman, Mohankumar, has said that there are about 4,000 complaints pending before the Commission, but many of them are not related to infringement on human rights and are of the nature of civil suits or complaints about issues like pollution. Talking to reporters informally after the Commission sitting here today, Mr Mohankumar said the Commission would continue the visits to mental hospitals. He said the Commission would be holding full sittings in every district along with the member, Prof. S. Verghese. The Commission considered 73 complaints received by it from the district, including 24 new ones. One of the complaints was from a women from Elavally near Chittattukara who alleged that she had lost her sight after a free cataract operation conducted in a hospital in Coimbatore. The woman, V.K. Radha, said she had undergone cataract surgery in August 2000 in Coimbatore as part of the free surgery camp arranged by a voluntary organisation in Elavally area. She said she was given an injection before the surgery and she had lost her sight after that. The Commission said it would conduct an inquiry before admitting the complaint. The Commission also received a petition seeking its intervention in ensuring the shifting of the Thrissur Medical College from the town to the Mulankunnathukavu campus.
