Fodder worth Rs. 20 lakhs decaying in Davangere

By Our Staff Correspondent

DAVANGERE, AUG. 24. The fodder stored by the district administration since last year to face any eventuality in case of failure of rain has started decaying. It could be rendered useless if the administration fails to distribute it among farmers in the next few days, according to sources.

The district administration has stored 4,500 tonnes of fodder till April this year to distribute it among farmers for their livestock in case of failure of rain and drought. Fodder is stored at Davangere, Harpanahalli and Chennagiri. However, it is not stored properly and in many places, thatched huts and abandoned old houses have been turned into stores. The district administration cited lack of proper storage facility for this.

Procedural wrangles

The fodder stored is worth Rs. 20 lakhs. Procedural wrangles prevented the district administration from distributing it among farmers in dry areas such as Jagalur, Chennagiri and Harpanahalli before the monsoon started in the first week of June. After it started raining, farmers did not see the need to seek fodder for their livestock as green fodder became available all over the district. Now there has arisen a situation wherein the stored fodder has began to decay.

The district administration wrote a letter to the Government seeking permission to distribute fodder free to Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribe and Backward Class farmers. The Government told the administration that it could not grant permission as the district administration had spent Rs. 20 lakhs on procuring fodder. The Government has reportedly asked the district administration to auction the fodder.

But it remains whether the farmers will lift the fodder.
