Lorry strike hits agri business

By Our Special Correspondent

TIRUPATI. Aug. 24. The central and the western parts of Chittoor district, which is known for its agri-business, is the worst hit by the nation-wide lorry strike which entered the fourth day today.

Tomato farmers are in a deep distress because the strikes has once again made the price of the tomato plunge to Rs.2 -- 3 a kg mark from its previous Rs.10-15 a kg bracket. While the ripe tomatoes are either being sold away locally at a throw-away price or left to wither in the field, the raw and hard ones, which can stand for at least three or four days, are being brought to the market and sent to other major towns nearby through RTC buses.

Labourers like hamalis who handle the loading and unloading od goods, bullock-cart and push-cart pullers, rickshaw pullers, auto-wallahs and road-side kiosk owners are also affected.

Meanwhile the CPI has expressed grave concern over the plight of the working class in the wake of the truckers strike and appealed to the Government to find an amicable end to the stalemate in the interest of the public and the labourers as well.
