TDP makes light of all-party meet

By Our Special Correspondent

HYDERABAD, AUG. 24. The Telugu Desam Party on Tuesday questioned the need for an all-party meet convened by the Chief Minister, Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy, on Wednesday to discuss, among others, the issue of unauthorised agriculture power connections. It demanded that the Government honour its promise of providing free power to all farmers.

Addressing a press conference here, TDP leaders -- K. Vidyadher Rao, G. Sukhender Reddy and P. Ramulu -- said it was `meaningless' to call for the meeting after the Government had already taken a decision.

Treatment for children suffering from heart ailment and the Srisailam water level were the other two items on the agenda.

`True colours'

Stating that the Congress was coming out in its `true colours' and shedding `crocodile tears' for farmers, they said the ruling party had never stated that free power would be given to regularised connections alone.

BJP demand

At a separate press conference, BJP State leaders -- Ch. Vidyasagar Rao and K. Laxman -- wanted the Government to re-think on the move to disconnect 3.5 lakh illegal connections. They criticised the threat of using police force.

The BJP leaders said the Rural Indebtedness Relief Act and the Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme should be implemented.
