By Our Staff Correspondent
UDUPI, AUG. 24. The Students Federation of India (SFI), the National Students Union of India (NSUI), and the All College Action Committee on Tuesday said that a "college bandh" would be observed in Udupi district on Wednesday to protest against the increase in private bus fares. Harish Kumar, committee convenor, told presspersons here that the SFI, the NSUI, and the committee would stage a "rasta rook" at the Hanuman Circle at 11 a.m. on Wednesday. S. Kaviraj, SFI district unit president, and Akilesh Kumar, NSUI Udupi block president, were present.
Altercation
Private bus services from Udupi to Kundapur were disrupted for sometime in the city following an altercation between students and a private bus conductor. A student, who was travelling by a private bus, asked the conductor why he was charging extra fare. This led to a quarrel between the two. The students then stopped the buses at the Karavalli Junction here. The police intervened and took the students into custody. Meanwhile, the Udupi District Bus Operators' Association lodged a complaint that there was no security for the bus crew. The police said that a compromise was arrived at during the negotiations.
Protest
Meanwhile, the people of Hoode, Padutonse and Kemmannu villages on Tuesday decided to hold a peaceful protest against fare hike in private buses.
The Padutonse Gram Panchayat President, Satish Shetty said a peaceful protest would begin at 6.30 a.m. on Wednesday.

A press release issued here by the authority Secretary said that the Deputy Commissioner, S.R. Umashankar, would preside over the meeting.
