BANGALORE, AUG. 24. Shopkeepers in V.V. Puram today downed their shutters in protest against the ban on parking on the diagonal road connecting Sajjan Rao Circle and Minerva Circle. The city police had prohibited parking to make the street an arterial road. Over 100 residents and shopkeepers of the area later held a demonstration. They were also against the alternative parking arrangements made by the traffic police on the conservancy lanes perpendicular to the road. The Mayor, P.R. Ramesh, who is also the Corporator from the ward, visited the area and assured the residents of sorting out the problem with the police. He suggested to the city Police Commissioner that the space between the roadside trees on the arterial road could be used for parking. Senior police officers visited the spot while a big posse of policemen to prevent any violence. The protest, which started at about 10.30 a.m. continued till late afternoon. Residents were upset because many of the conservancy lanes were now being used for parking, disturbing their peace. Shopkeepers, many of them automobile consultants, were angry that they could no longer park their vehicles close to their outlets. According to the Mayor, the conservancy roads were used as parking lots because of the availability of area. "About 1,000 vehicles could be parked there. The auto consultants who want to park their vehicles close to their shops could give applications. We will forward them to the Police Commissioner," Mr. Ramesh said.
