KOCHI, AUG. 24. The joint forum of trade unions has demanded that Hindustan Insecticides Limited (HIL) at Eloor should not be closed down on the basis of the recommendation made by the Supreme Court Monitoring Committee (SCMC) on hazardous waste. The CITU representative in the forum, K.N. Gopinath, said in a press release that the Government should not accept the committee recommendation for the closure of HIL as the report was biased. He said that the Government should make its stand clear on the recommendations made by the committee. The press release said that HIL had been working in accordance with the hazardous waste rules. The company was also treating its effluents properly through its effluent treatment plant, the release said. The trade unions have demanded that the Government study in detail the recommendations made by the committee on companies like the FACT, Binani Zinc and Kerala Mines and Minerals.
