KOCHI, AUG. 24. The four-day-old nationwide strike by lorry operators and transport contractors was beginning to have its impact on the State, which is the grip of Onam festivities, with the main grains market at Mattancherry reporting a slight shortage in some of the items. However, a spokesman for the Grain Merchants' Association ruled out any unnatural rise in prices as the shortage was limited to a few items. Peas Dal supply is yet to be replenished at the main market, he said. As of now, however, there was no reason to be alarmed about a scarcity, he said. Red chilly and coriander supplies too needed to be replenished soon, he added. The supply of vegetables continues to be normal as reported from the Ernakulam main market. There was no major swing in the price of vegetables on Tuesday. Meanwhile, the operations of the Cochin Port Trust continue to be normal. An official in the traffic department at the port said that cargo movement to and from the port was normal.
