MYSORE, AUG. 25. Rajanand, veteran Kannada film and stage artiste, died in a hospital here on Wednesday. He was 74. Rajanand, a diabetic, was admitted to BGS Apollo Hospital on Tuesday for treatment of a kidney ailment. According to sources in the hospital, he died of renal failure. Rajanand, who acted in 318 films, including Bayalu Deepa, was on dialysis for the past 15 days. His last rites were performed at the foot of the Chamundi Hills in the evening. Rajanand is survived by his wife, Vimalamma, daughter Chandrasheela, and son, Ravichandra. Another daughter, Suryakala, died earlier. Born at Harhahalli in Arsikere taluk, Rajanand began his acting career in theatre before entering the Kannada film world. His first film was Chakrathirtha. Ranga Nayaki and Guru Shishya are among the popular films in which Rajanand made a mark. He got the Rajyothsava Award and the Lifetime Achievement Award of the State Government in 1991 and January 2003,. He acted in 318 films and directed 350 plays. M.G. Sadanandaiah, Deputy Director, Department of Kannada and Culture, visited Rajanand's house here and paid his last respects. Family sources regretted that nobody from the Kannada film industry visited Rajanand when he was ailing. The Chief Minister, N. Dharam Singh, has mourned the death of Rajanand. In a message here, Mr. Singh said Mr. Rajananda brought dignity to the characters he played in the films. In his death, the Kannada film industry had lost a seasoned character artiste.
