SALEM, AUG. 25. Members of `Kurinchi Mahalir Iyakkam', a women self-help group from Kadayampatti union, today staged a demonstration in front of the Collectorate here to demand basic amenities in a cluster of villages in Kadayampatti union in Omalur taluk.

The members hailing from Umbilikkampatti, Nadupatti, Danishpet, Vepillai, Pommiampatti, Kanavaipudur, K.Kuttapatti, Pannapatti, Semmandapatti, Mookanur and Poosaripatti claimed that the villages did not have any basic facility. Streetlights were not installed. Potable water was not available.

Roads were not laid and sanitary complexes were not constructed. The members also had been demanding house pattas for the poor and needy for long.

But despite repeated requests, the district administration did not heed to their demands. They said that many of these villages did not even have drinking water. The women and villagers had approached village panchayat leaders and officials at the Block Development Office umpteen times. But nothing worthwhile had happened.

Demand for building

Meanwhile, hundreds of women belonging to various self-help groups in Udayapatti and Adikarapatti village panchayats resorted to road blockade on the Salem-Attur National Highway for 30 minutes urging the district administration to remove the hurdles in the construction of a SHG building at Adikarapatti.

They claimed that a powerful few in the village did not allow the women to construct an SHG building for which the Government had sanctioned "patta'' land in the village.

Frustrated at this, they blocked the road. Officials rushed to the spot and warned those who resisted the construction of the SHG building.
