Assembly prorogued

Hyderabad: The Governor, S.S. Barnala, through a notification here on Wednesday, prorogued the first session of the 12th Assembly which began on May 31.

Three children drowned

KURNOOL: Three schoolchildren were drowned in a quarry pit near Chintakunta village in Allagadda mandal on Wednesday.

According to reports, the children, while returning home from their school, got into the pond for swimming and were drowned. They were identified as Swapna (7), Lingareddy (9) and Obulesu (8). The children hailed from Devarayapuram on the outskirts of Chintakunta.

Honour for geophysicists

HYDERABAD: P.R. Reddy, CSIR emeritus scientist, and R.N. Singh, scientist (director's grade), National Geophysical Research Institute (NGRI) and former director of NEERI, Nagpur, have been jointly selected for the Indian Geophysical Union Decennial Award.

Dr. Reddy and Dr. Singh have been chosen for the award for their outstanding contribution to the field of earth sciences as senior geophysicists. The award, gold medals, will be presented to them on December 29 during the inaugural function of the IGU 41st annual convention at Rajkot, Gujarat, according to a press release issued by NGRI here.

Appointed ACB counsel

HYDERABAD: The State Government has appointed V. Ravi Kiran Rao standing counsel-cum-special public prosecutor, Anti-Corruption Bureau, for a period of three years from the date of taking charge of the post. He will conduct cases on behalf of the ACB in the High Court, Andhra Pradesh Administrative Tribunal and any of the courts of the special judges of ACB.

Exam results out

HYDERABAD: The Institute of Company Secretaries of India has released the results of company secretaries examination held in June last.

The results are available with regional centres, chapters and satellite chapter offices of the institute. They are also available on the website, www.icsi.edu. Subject wise marks will be available on the website from August 29. They will also be sent by e-mail to the students who had registered their requests along with their e-mail addresses.

The next examination of Company Secretaryship for foundation, intermediate and final examinations will be held from December 26 to January 3. The last date for submission of applications is September 27, according to a press release.

Janashakti's meet tomorrow

HYDERABAD: A public meeting will be organised to coincide with the first death anniversary of a Central Committee member of Janashakti group of naxalites, D. Subhash, at Rudraram in Medak district on Friday.

The meeting will be addressed by the emissaries for peace talks with the Government on behalf of Janashakti and PW, including Chandranna, Challapalli Srinivasa Rao, Varavara Rao, Gadar and G. Kalyan Rao. It will be preceded by unveiling of a martyrs' memorial at nearby Kazipur village, according to a press release.

Fresh summons to ex-MP

ADILABAD: Fresh summons has been issued to the former Adilabad MP, S. Venugopalachary, to appear at the Boath Judicial First Class Magistrate court on September 22 in a case under the ST, ST Atrocities (Prevention) Act. He failed to appear before the court on Wednesday after he reportedly failed to receive the earlier summons.

The summons was issued following a private case filed by a former medical officer of Bazarhatnoor primary health centre, B. Vidya Kumar. He alleged that Mr. Venugopalachary had slapped him and verbally abused him in the name of his caste last year.

Chosen for award

HYDERABAD: E. Bhagiratha Rao, a retired DRDO scientist, has been chosen for the prestigious VASVIK (Vivadhlaxi Audyogik Samshodan Vikas Kendra) award for his contribution to electrical and electronic sciences and technologies.

The award, carrying a cash prize of Rs.50,000 and a citation, will be presented by the Minister for Civil Aviation, Praful Patel, in Mumbai on September 18. Lord Navnit Dholakia of WALTHAM BROOKS OBE DL, House of Lords, London, will attend as guest of honour.

Dr. Rao joined the DRDO as a senior research fellow in 1959 and later held several positions, including director, Defence Electronics Applications Laboratory and director, Defence Electronics Research Laboratory. He retired in 1991 and is currently the president of the Institute of Defence Scientists and Technologists, an association of retired DRDO officers.

Bomb attack alleged

CUDDAPAH: Two unidentified persons hurled bombs at the house of the district Congress Kisan Morcha secretary, Kakarla Ravikumar Chowdary, in Mangalampalle village in Kodur mandal in the early hours of Wednesday, but there was no loss of life or property.

His father, Subbaiah Chowdary, woke up when the bombs exploded and found two persons fleeing the place in darkness, according to a complaint lodged with the police.

Lifer for double murder

CUDDAPAH: Thirteen accused persons in a double murder case were sentenced to life imprisonment and pay a fine of Rs. 500 each by the Additional Sessions Judge of Proddatur, A. Sahadevudu, on Tuesday.

They were charged with the killing of Maraiah and Pilla Maranna of a rival group on October 15, 2000. The accused were Jeemani Ramakrishnudu, Venkataramudu, Ramadasu, Venkataramudu, Chinna Obanna alias Bheemudu, Sriramulu, Ramanaiah, Venkataiah, V. Munaiah, C. Gurrappa, P.H. Obulesu, G. Peddaiah and Chinna Subbanna.

More IA flights to Tirupati

TIRUPATI: The Indian Airlines management has decided to increase the frequency of the Hyderabad-Tirupati-Hyderabad IC 943/944 flight. It will be operated four days a week from August 30 -- Monday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday.

As per the new schedule, the flight leaves Hyderabad at 11.30 hours, arrives at Tirupati by 12.25 hours, departs here at 13.05 hours and reaches Hyderabad by 14.00 hours, according to P. Gnanesh, IA's area marketing manager.

Man murdered

KURNOOL: A41-year-old man was allegedly murdered at Kallur here on Tuesday night. According to the police, the victim was identified as Purushotham Swamy. Some unidentified persons allegedly beat him to death when he was loitering at Kallur Crossroad. While the police suspect old enmity as the reason behind his murder, his wife, Kumari, said they had no enemies. The Inspector, Mallikarjuna Verma is investigating.

Doctorate

KURNOOL: Y. Raghunatha Reddy, was awarded the Doctorate degree by Sri Krishnadevaraya University for his thesis on `Reliability Analysis for Two Component Non-identical Systems with Common Cause Shock Failures.' Mr. Reddy is attached to the department of OR and SQC at PG centre here.

Elected

CUDDAPAH: The Deputy CEO of Zilla Parishad, Dastagiri Reddy, on Wednesday declared Siddhavatam MPTC member, Nagarani, of the TDP unanimously elected as Siddhavatam Mandal Parishad president. Of the five MPTC members, three of the TDP and two Congress voted in her support and three other members abstained.

Red sanders seized

NELLORE: Following a tip off, the forest officials intercepted a tempo van near Nellore on Wednesday and seized red sanders valued around Rs. 1 lakh. . It has been stated that the material was allegedly being transported from Cuddapah district to Chennai.

Police launch manhunt

NELLORE: The police in Dagadarthi have launched a manhunt for nabbing two offenders who allegedly escaped from custody. The incident created a scare in the area and the Superintendent of Police, B. Sivadhar Reddy, has assured that the offenders would be nabbed.

Petrol bunk looted

NELLORE: A case of theft of cash, from a petrol bunk, near Kagitalapur village of Manubolu mandal has been reported. According to the police, a complaint was received about the theft on Wednesday, claiming that the staff on morning duty found the locker removed and cash missing. The Manubolu police are investigating
