KOCHI, AUG. 25. The Kerala High Court has directed the Government to reconsider the request of M.G. College of Engineering, Thiruvallam and Thiruvananthapuram, for sanction to admit students in its colleges within one week. Justice K. Balakrishnan Nair issued the direction on a petition filed by the college. The Government had decided not to grant no-objection certificates for starting any new self-financing engineering colleges for two years. The court said the Government could not refuse sanction for admission of students after granting NOC to the college. The Government could take such a decision only at the time of the granting NOC.
Police protection
A Bench comprising Justice K.S. Radhakrishnan and Justice J. M James ordered police protection to the Principal and other staff of the St. Michael's College, Cherthala. The court directed the sub-inspector of Arthungal police station to provide effective and adequate police protection to them. According to the Principal, the college had decided to give two final year B.Com. students compulsory transfer certificate as they had indulged in assaulting the Principal and the assistant manger in July 23. The students belonged to the AISF. The Principal was threatened after the students were informed about the decision.
Decision upheld
The court today upheld the Government decision to reject the tenders received for selling 54 acres of land which were reclaimed from the backwaters for constructing the Goshree bridges in Kochi. The Goshree Island Development Authority (GIDA) had submitted before the court that the Local-Self-Government Department had decided to reject the tenders submitted in 2003 and float fresh global tenders in view of the construction of new bridges connecting the Vypeen islands with the mainland. The GIDA also thought that the land would fetch higher price as the land value had gone up now. The court, however, directed the General Council of GIDA to take a final decision in the matter before finalising fresh tenders. The GIDA's general council had to approve the decision of the Government.
Temple committee
A Division Bench has held that that the Cochin Devaswom Board had the power to nominate members to the temple welfare committees. The ruling was given while dismissing the petitions filed by various temple welfare committees challenging the decision of the board to nominate members to the committee.
Habeas corpus plea
Bindu, wife of Sabu Varghese, has filed a habeas corpus petition seeking production of her husband who had been in the illegal custody of Mumbai police. He was arrested in a case relating to defrauding of many persons in the name of network marketing. The court asked the Government pleader to file a statement in response to the petition. According to Ms. Bindu, the whereabouts of her husband were not known since he was arrested by the Mumbai police.
