MYSORE, AUG. 25. As many as 300 delegates are likely to attend the central-zone conference of the International College of Surgeons (ICS) India chapter here from August 27 to 29. The event is being held in collaboration with the city-based JSS Medical College. At a press conference here on Wednesday, S.B. Vasanth Kumar, Principal of the medical college and organising secretary of the conference, said young surgeons from Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh and Madhya Pradesh would be trained in the fundamentals of surgery during the event. Twenty-five senior surgeons in the country would deliver special lectures. Dr. Kumar recalled that the city hosted the national conference of the ICS in 1999, which attracted more than 800 delegates from across the country. The ICS, founded in 1935 by Max Thorek, a surgeon who emigrated to the U.S. from Hungary, brings together surgeons of recognised professional calibre from all over the world. The organisation strives to improve medical care in developing countries, besides providing a link to many international humanitarian organisations. Organising scientific meetings all over the world is part of its activities. "These events provide an opportunity to the members to exchange professional knowledge and develop mutual respect and understanding in an international setting,'' an organiser said.
