New light on firing incident

By Our Staff Reporter

NEW DELHI, AUG. 25. The incident of firing in which a 28-year-old man was shot at from close range at Krishna Nagar in East Delhi on August 21 was apparently a case of dacoity attempt gone awry. This was revealed during interrogation of four persons who were arrested by the East Delhi police for allegedly planning a dacoity on Tuesday evening.

According to the police, Krishna Nagar police arrested four persons -- Harprashad, Ram Shankar Pandey, Santosh Yadav and Naushad -- in a raid near a railway track. One of the suspects managed to escape.

Interrogation revealed that Santosh, a resident of Farrukhabad district in Uttar Pradesh, had tipped-off his associates about presence of huge cash in the house of Sumer Chander, a resident of Kanti Nagar in Krishna Nagar and a contractor who belonged to his native village.

As per plan, Ram Shankar, Harprashad and Rajesh entered Sumer's house on August 21 during the day with the intention to commit robbery. At the time, only Sumer's wife was present in the house. She was taking a nap but woke up after hearing the commotion and raised an alarm.

The intruders panicked and Harprashad opened fire. He had intended to shoot Sumer's wife but missed the target due to darkness and the bullet hit Rajesh. Sumer's wife then rushed out of the house and alerted the neighbours. In a bid to silence her, the duo tried to strangle her as a result of which she fell unconscious. They then escaped from the spot leaving Rajesh behind. He was rushed to hospital where he is still recovering.

Initially, the police had suspected that Rajesh, who had criminal cases registered against him, was a victim of rivalry between the criminals.

Interrogation also revealed that Harprashad and Santosh were involved in the dacoity in the house of Satish Kumar Jain at Shanti Mohalla in Krishna Nagar in July. All the accused are skilled labourers, mostly involved in masonry and carpentry. During the lean season, they form a gang and indulge in robberies and dacoities to earn fast money, the police said. Further investigations are on.
