Thiruvananthapuram
By Our Staff Reporter
THIRUVANANTHAPURAM, AUG. 25 . The cellular services network of BSNL in Thiruvananthapuram and Kollam were thrown out of gear for more than two hours this evening following a fault in the Optic Fibre network at a location near Kollam. According to BSNL officials here, the main ring of the Synchronous Transmission Media network of optic fibre cables turned faulty, thereby preventing the back-up system from taking over as soon as the network crashed. The reasons for the network failure are yet to be ascertained. Users of the Cellone and Excel cellular services in Thiruvananthapuram and Kollam were put to considerable difficulty as the network failed in the evening hours, when cellular traffic normally peaks. The fault was rectified at about 9 p.m. and normal services restored shortly afterwards. The General Manager (Mobile), BSNL, K.V. Balasubramanian, said the failure of the network was not due to surge in traffic or as the result of clogging of the network. "We will take steps to ensure that this does not happen again," he added.
