TIRUCHI, AUG. 25 . The Tamil Nadu Income Tax SC and ST Employees Welfare and Cultural Association has sought a new legislation to ensure reservation for the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes in the private sector. A resolution was unanimously passed at the association's second State-level conference held here on Monday. The association has also sought enactment of a legislation giving proper representation for the SC and ST in the distribution of national wealth by earmarking certain percentage of reservation in trade and commerce while allotting tender, contract, licence for import and export etc. Another resolution adopted at the conference sought 25 per cent reservation for the SC and ST, considering the increase in population as per the latest census. The conference also demanded the restoration of "panchami lands" to the Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribe people. Yet another resolution called for bringing a new legislation fixing the retirement age at 60 or 33 years of service, which ever is earlier, to enable the SC and ST officers to reach the top level in the department. Demanding the removal of post-based roaster, the conference wanted to restore vacancy-based roaster system, which had existed for long. Another resolution sought special casual leave to all delegates attending SC/ST conferences in the Income Tax Department. A total of 20 resolutions were unanimously passed at the conference, which was inaugurated by the Chief Commissioner of Income Tax - I, Chennai, Radha Balakrishnan in the morning. In her brief address at the valediction, Kannegi Packianathan, Director, National Commission for SC and ST, Chennai, highlighted the role played by the Commission in taking care of the welfare of the SCs and STs. The general secretary of the TAISEWA, B. Sahadevan, and the All-India Income Tax SC and ST Employees Association vice president, P. Venu spoke.
