Stamp on S.S. Vasan released

By Our Special Correspondent

The Chief Post Master-General, Vatsala Raghu, releasing a set of stamps commemorating Padma Bhushan S.S. Vasan and handing it over to the Joint Managing Director of the Ananda Vikatan group, B. Srinivasan, at a function in Chennai on Thursday.

CHENNAI, AUG. 26. A commemorative stamp and first day cover in memory of Padma Bhushan S.S. Vasan were released here today at a function at the Head Post Office. They were released by the Chief Post Master-General Vatsala Raghu, who handed them over to the Joint Managing Director, Vikatan Group of companies, B. Srinivasan.

Thiruthuraipoondi Subramanian Srinivasan, who came to be known as S.S. Vasan, was associated with both journalism and cinema. He was an advertising space-seller, a novelist, translator and a catalogue-shopping vendor before entering the field of journalism. He bought the Ananda Vikatan in 1928 and shaped it into a leading Tamil weekly.

He then stepped into the field of cinema, founding the Gemini studio, which served as a breeding ground for innumerable artists and technicians. The `Gemini twins' became a household symbol and the Gemini flyover was named after the original studio at that junction.

The commemorative stamp carries the portrait of S.S. Vasan and the famous drum dance from his film "Chandralekha". Today was the 35th remembrance day of the late Vasan and also his centenary.

Speaking on the occasion, Mr. Srinivasan said: "He had left an unambiguous instruction to his family to desist from any activity that would be tantamount to propagation of his name. We have arranged for this simple function in deference to his wishes."
