Annamalai university triune celebrations kick off

CHIDAMBARAM, AUG. 26. The Triune celebrations of Annamalai University was kicked off by the pro-Chancellor M.A.M. Ramaswamy, who received two `jubilee torches' taken from Raja Annamalaipuram in Chennai and Kanadukathan at Chettinad by students on Wednesday.

The torches reached the university simultaneously, after having travelled hundreds of kilometres. The Vice-Chancellor L.B. Venkatrangan, the former Director of the Central Bureau of Investigation, D. Karthikeyan, the Registrar M. Rathinasabapathy, the secretary to VC, Balashanmugham, the organiser of the exhibition committee, Palaniappan, were present.

Later the pro-Chancellor laid foundations stones for construction of a swimming pool near the VC's residence (on the university campus), 250 bathrooms in Thamarai Illam, physical education classes, medical college playground among others.

The Triune functions include the Platinum Jubilee of the university, the birth centenary of Rajah Sir Muthiah Chettiar and the Silver Jubilee of the Directorate of Distance Education.

Kalam's visit

The university is fully decked up to celebrate the Triune celebrations tomorrow, and the President, A.P.J.Abdul Kalam, would grace the occasion. A helipad has been specially put up on the campus for the arrival of the President from Tiruchi. After landing on the campus, the President would proceed by road to the Keerapalayam village near Bhuvanagiri, about 10 km from Chidambaram. The President will spend half hour, from 8.55 a.m. to 9.25 a.m. in the village, and during the brief period he would have a look at the articles produced by the self-help groups and would also interact with the members.

The Keerapalayam Panchayat has undertaken certain improvement works, such as relaying certain roads, erecting an arch to commemorate the event, a roadside park and so on.

At 9.30 a.m., the President would leave for Annamalai University where he would declare open the Platinum Jubilee Hall and inaugurate the jubilee celebrations at 9.45 a.m. The former president, R.Venkatraman, would unveil the Birth Centenary Memorial Arch (in memory of Rajah Sir Muthiah Chettiar) and deliver a speech. The Governor and Chancellor, Ramamohan Rao, would preside.

After the function, the President would fly by helicopter to Rameswaram.
