Ramesh scores century

CHENNAI, AUG. 27. Sadagopan Ramesh revelled in the conditions at the MAC stadium to notch up a century (104, 13 x 4, 1 x 6), as TNCA President's XI's scored 389 for nine in the stipulated 90 overs on the opening day of the three-day semifinal against Maharashtra in the Sahara Buchi Babu all-India invitation cricket tournament on Friday.

Ramesh's century and his association in the 129-run first wicket stand with skipper S. Suresh (68) laid the foundation for the imposing total.

If TNCA team could maintain a strike rate of over four runs an over then credit has also to go to Badri Attavar (41) and J. Hariesh (76 not out). Off-spinner Kashinath Khadkirkar toiled for his three for 108 returns.

The other semifinal is keenly poised with SPIC-TNCA XI courting trouble at 29 for two by stumps diluting in the process much of the good work done earlier in restricting Punjab Colts, which opted to bat first, to 217. With off-spinner Rajesh Sharma, a regular wicket-taker in the city league, sending both openers back, there is promise of a close fight on the morrow.

The scores:

At MAC: TNCA President's XI 389 for nine in 90 overs (S. Suresh 68, S. Ramesh 104, Badri Attavar 41, J. Hariesh 76 not out, Kashinath Khadkikar three for 101) v Maharashtra

At IIT-Chemplast: Punjab Colts 217 in 79.1 overs (Uday Kaul 51, Amit Uniyal 68, R. Ramkumar four for 60) v SPIC-TNCA XI 29 for two in eight overs.
