ANANTAPUR, AUG. 27. The row between workers of handlooms and powerlooms in the district over making of certain varieties of cloth, reserved for the former as per the Supreme Court judgment, turned violent later last night at Hindupur. A mob of handloom workers laid a siege to the One Town police station and tried to attack the Circle Inspector, Sivarami Reddy. A head constable was injured following pelting of stones on the on the police station. They also set afire a tent under which the workers of powerlooms were carrying out a relay fast. However, no one was hurt as the powerloom workers left the tent minutes before the handloom workers attacked it. The DSP of Penukonda, Solmon C. Wesley, rushed to Hindupur around 11 p.m. and talked to the leaders of both the groups.
SP holds talks
Meanwhile, the Superintendent of Police, Anil Kumar, summoned the leaders of both the groups to Penukonda on Friday and held discussions with them. After speaking to the district Collector, Y.V. Anuradha, he told them to maintain calm till Monday when talks between the two would be held again at Anantapur to resolve the impasse. After getting a court stay to maintain status quo on the fabric making, the powerloom workers commenced relay fast agitation from Wednesday, seeking protection to them from the handloom workers. The handloom workers too went on a relay fast from Thursday near the handloom workers' camp.
