Farmer's death due to short-circuit: Discom

By Our Special Correspondent

HYDERABAD, AUG. 27. The Andhra Pradesh Central Power Distribution Company clarified on Friday that the death of Chakali Hanumappa, a farmer of Yalal mandal in Ranga Reddy district, on Thursday, was due to electrical short-circuit but not suicide as alleged by some political parties.

The farmer, who owns seven acres of land at Jakkepalli, had two agricultural connections, of which one was unauthorised. He offered to pay money for regularising it on August 24, but the local engineers rejected his request, as it would overload the transformer, the Discom maintained. This had nothing to do with the death.

Official clarifies

Putting across its version at a press conference here today, the Discom CMD, Heeralal Samariya, said Hanumappa came in contact with the low overhanging live wire as he walked on the elevated bund and died on the spot. This was corroborated by the post-mortem and the Panchanama reports. As the villagers switched off the transformer, Telugu Desam leaders pulled off the wires to depict Hanumappa's death as a suicide and lifted his body for their agitation at Lakshminarayanpur crossroads.

Meanwhile, the Ranga Reddy district Collector, L. Premchandra Reddy, also clarified that the death of Hanumappa was an accident and he died after coming into contact with a livewire while going to his agricultural field.

Mr. Reddy told reporters that the RDO concerned and the local MRO had conducted an inquiry into the incident and his comments were based on their report.
