YSR tour to Srisailam, Vijaywada

Hyderabad: The Chief Minister, Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy, is visiting Beechupalli and Srisailam on Saturday to participate in Krishna Pushkarams. He will also visit Vijayawada later.

According to an official release, Dr. Reddy will reach Beechupalli at 7.50 a.m. and participate in Krishna Pushkarams there. He will reach Srisailam at 10.05 a.m. where he would visit the Pushkar ghats and the temple. From Srisailam, he will proceed to Vijayawada reaching there at 12.25 p.m. In Vijaywada, he will inaugurate the renovated Victoria Museum, flyover at Kaleswararao Market, khadi exhibition and a new passenger terminal at the railway station. He is also expected to visit Krishna Pushkar ghat and inaugurate Bhavani Island near Krishna River.

He is expected to return to Hyderbad later in the afternoon.

Pushkaram events on AIR

HYDERABAD: All-India Radio will broadcast special programmes in connection with the Krishna Pushkarams beginning August 28. The programmes include running commentary from Beechupalli (7.15 a.m. to 7.53 a.m. and 8.45 a.m. to 9.3 a.m.), from Srisailam (9.30 a m. to 11 a.m.) and Vijayawada (11 a.m. to 12.30 p.m. and 12.40 p.m. to 1.40 p.m.) on August 28. It will broadcast daily reports on the highlights of the events at different places from 8.35 a.m. to 9.05 a.m. The programmes can be heard on all 12 AIR stations in the State, according to Durga Bhaskar, Station Director.

Fee waiver for Vidya volunteers

HYDERABAD: The Government has decided to waive the course fee of Rs. 6,000 for the Special Vidya Volunteers, who were being given training while on job to become eligible for absorption as regular teachers. The Government has also decided to enhance their stipend to Rs.1,500 for the second year, from April 2004.

The Minister for School Education, N. Rajyalakshmi said the decision to waive the fee was taken as majority of these candidates belonged to lower strata of the society and meagre income groups. The entire cost of expenditure would be met by the DPEP funds.

CPI resents RBI decision

HYDERABAD: The Communist Party of India (CPI) today expressed disappointment over the Reserve Bank of India and the State Government's joint decision to permit each depositor of the Prudential Cooperative Bank to withdraw Rs.20,000.

In a statement issued here, K. Narayana, CPI assistant secretary, feared that the decision was prelude to liquidation of the bank. He criticised the present and the previous governments for holding out hopes of reviving the bank. He urged the Government to provide counter-guarantee for the bank's revival.

Pak woman's bail plea rejected

WARANGAL: Ishrat Sultana, a Pakistani national who was remanded to judicial custody for staying in India beyond the period permitted by her visitor's visa, was produced in court here on Friday through a video conference. Her plea for bail was rejected by the Munsif Magistrate, who extended the judicial remand for another 15 days. It may be recalled that Ms. Sultana, who is married to Zaheer-ul-Haq of Kazipet, came to the country in May this year on a visitor's visa. Her visa experied in the last week of May. She was arrested on August 13 and sent to judicial remand. Mr. Zaheer is trying to secure bail and get Ms. Sultana's visa extended.

Cotton farmer ends life

KARIMNAGAR: A cotton farmer, L. Rajender Rao (33) committed suicide by consuming pesticides in Pathagudur village of Velgatoor mandal in early hours of Friday. Reports reaching here said that the farmer resorted to this extreme act due to failure of crop and unable to clear the debts. He is survived by his wife and two children.

Appointed regional organiser

HYDERABAD: The State Government has appointed C. Jayaprada Reddy as regional organiser of the People's Action for Women Development and Child Welfare in Mahabubnagar, Ranga Reddy and Nalgonda districts. She will monitor the involvement of people in programmes intended for women's development and child welfare for a period of two years in the districts, according to a press release issued by the Chief Minister's Office.

Power Grid bags contract

HYDERABAD: The Power Grid Corporation of India Ltd has secured a prestigious consultancy assignment for power system inter-connection between Ethiopia and Djibouti against stiff international competition from reputed firms. The assignment will enable the Power Grid to market its expertise in different facets of power systems, a press release stated on Friday.

German team calls on YSR

HYDERABAD: A German delegation, comprising Konrad Hagedorn and Ramesh Chennamaneni, on Friday called on the Chief Minister, Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy, and apprised him of the project, `Hyderabad as a Megacity of Tomorrow', targeted at problems in core sectors like nutrition, health and environment, funded by the German Government over a 10-year period.

Ch. Rajeswara Rao, TDP MLA and father of Mr. Ramesh, said the delegation had sought the support of the State Government in implementing the project. The team members also spoke to Dr. Reddy about the possibility of a consortium for irrigation projects, involving Godavari water and funded by the German Development Bank (KFW). The Chief Ministeris said to have assured the German delegation of all help in exploring avenues of close cooperation and implementing the said projects.

NCC gesture to

ailing kids

KARIMNAGAR: The National Cadet Corps of Government degree college, Jammikunta, have collected Rs 20,000 to help children suffering from heart ailments and donated the same to the Care Foundation, Hyderabad.

In a press note here on Friday, the NCC officiating commanding officer, B Madhusudhan Reddy, said that the cadets had contributed Rs 2,000 from their pocket money, the NCC officer, B Chandramouli Rs 1,000 and the remaining Rs 17,000 was collected as donation.

Mine mishap

KARIMNAGAR: The Andhra Pradesh High Court Judge, Justice Bilal Nazki will visit Godavarikhani on August 29 to conduct an inquiry into the Singareni Collieries Company Limited (SSCL) 7 LEP mine mishap that occurred last year where 17 miners were killed when the water suddenly gushed into the underground mine, according to an official release here.

In ACB net

WARANGAL: Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) personnel trapped two employees of the district Minorities Finance Corporation here on Friday.

The Corporation's manager Hammemudding and clerk Chary were arrested by ACB officials who were said to be caught red-handed while accepting bribe for showing an official favour. According to the ACB DSP, KSN Murthy, one Yakub Pasha of Ponugodu village in Gudur mandal was sanctioned Rs 15,000 under a housing scheme of which he was eligible for Rs 7,500 subsidy. Though the scheme was sanctioned one year ago, the employees at the corporation had been demanding money, it was alleged.

Vexed with the attitude of the employees, Mr. Pasha approached the ACB officials.

Suspended

KARIMNAGAR: The Collector, C Parthasarathi, has suspended the Gangadhara mandal Burugulapalli village secretary, A Laxman Raju, on the charge of dereliction of duties and keeping the official records with private persons, according to an official release.

Farmers compensated

CUDDAPAH: A sum of Rs. 30.12 lakhs has been sanctioned to pay compensation to small and marginal farmers who suffered crop losses due to gales in April and May this year. Banana, mango, papaya, orange, sweet lime, drumstick, betel leaf plantations and flower gardens were damaged in Pullampet, Rajampet, Nandalur, Kodur, Chitvel, Vontimitta and Khajipet mandals due to gales, according to an official statement. The amounts allotted mandal-wise are: Pullampet - Rs. 7.41 lakhs, Chitvel - Rs. 3.36 lakhs, Kodur - Rs. 1.71 lakhs, Nandalur - Rs. 95,360, Vontimitta - Rs. 59,600, Rajampet - Rs. 38,395 and Khajipet - Rs. 22,750.

CUDDAPAH: The Chief Justice of A.P. High Court, Justice Devinder Gupta, will inaugurate the Junior Civil Judge Court building at Pulivendula on August 28.

The court, which was functioning since the last 50 years in the Pulivendula MRO office premises, would shift to the new building built at a cost of Rs. 46.20 lakhs on Saturday. The Judge of A.P. High Court, T.C.H. Surya Rao, who is the Portfolio Judge of Cuddapah district, the Principal District Judge, T. Lakshmana Rao, other judicial officers and Bar Association members will participate in the programme.

NELLORE: A house was gutted in Allipuram area of Nellore town on Friday, resulting in the loss of household articles and insurance bonds. The exact cause of the fire is not known. Fire tenders from Nellore put out the fire.

Fasting woman

arrested CUDDAPAH: K. Venkatasubbamma, the wife of a physiotherapist, Radhakrishna Murthy, working at the leprosy centre at Vempalle, who was on a hunger strike for the last four days, alleging that her husband was being harassed by denying him promotion, was arrested and shifted to the Cuddapah Government hospital on Thursday night. The Pulivendula Circle Inspector, Rajeswar Reddy, shifted her to the hospital when doctors concluded that her health condition had deteriorated.

Woman dies in road mishap

NELLORE: A woman passenger was killed and 7 others were injured when the autorickshaw in which they were travelling overturned near Chinnakraka village of Jaladanki mandal, on Thursday night. The police are investigating.

Truckers' stir enters 7th day

CUDDAPAH: Over 2,800 lorries continued to be off the roads in Cuddapah district for the seventh day on Friday. The Lorry Owners' Associations of Cuddapah, Proddatur, Rayachoti, Rajampet and Badvel, are participating in the stir resenting the levy of 10 per cent service tax. The transportation of essential commodities such as milk, vegetables and fruits, and petroleum and LPG tankers continued without any disruption so far.

DYFI activists stage dharna

NELLORE: Activists of the Democratic Youth Federation of India (DYFI), staged a protest march in Nellore on Friday, demanding reduction in the prices of essential commodities. The Federation expressed concern over the sudden spurt in the prices and said that such a development within 100 days of assuming power by the Congress, has created severe inconvenience to people.
