Students stage protest

By Our Staff Reporter

COIMBATORE, AUG. 27 . Several hundred students of an aided-school near Singanallur squatted on Tiruchi Road in protest against the proposed move by a funding agency to auction the school properties as part of the liquidation process.

The school was formerly run by a private textile mill that was closed after it became a sick unit during the recent economic recession. To clear the debts and to meet the financial requirements for settling the dues to the workers, the properties of the mill attached to a funding agency, were liquidated.

The liquidation took place in phases and rumours were rife that even the school properties would be auctioned shortly. This led to unrest among the students, parents and the staff. The agitators wanted the Government to take over the school. The road roko led to a roadblock.

As traffic was diverted via Sowripalayam, areas including Upplipalayam witnessed traffic snarls. The road-roko that began in the morning continued after noon. The Collector, S. Kosalaraman, called on the agitators and assured that the Government would intervene and take effective steps to resolve the issue.

He also ordered for a meeting with the funding agency, Education Department, teachers and parents to find out ways for resolving the issue without affecting the future of the students. The agitators ended the protest at around 2.15 p.m. easing traffic congestion.
