HYDERABAD, AUG. 27. The Government will spend Rs. 4,300 crores over the next three years to take up repairs and laying of new roads under the Roads and Buildings Department, according to the Minister for Roads and Buildings, Jakkampudi Rammohan Rao. Constitution of a Cabinet sub-committee to study road safety aspect, phasing out the old departmental guest houses and leasing out the same land for construction of new guest houses with facility for commercial use and launching awareness campaign on the road safety are some of the major decisions taken at the review meeting of the R and B Department by the Chief Minister, Y.S .Rajasekhara Reddy, on Friday.
Report sought
Mr. Rammohan Rao told reporters later that the officials concerned were asked to prepare a report on the status of the roads and plan out repairs and laying of new ones. He said 19,000 km of rural roads were transferred from the Panchayat Raj Department to the R and B. Of this, the previous TDP Government had taken up repairs and laying of new roads covering only 6,000 km. The State Government has decided to take up the remaining stretch of 13,000 kms besides covering 3,500 kms of high-density roads criss crossing the towns and villages in the State.
