`Green code' for buildings soon

By Our Staff Reporter

HYDERABAD, AUG. 27. The Chief Minister, Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy, has said that the State Government will seriously consider implementing a `Green building code'. Not only should the method of construction use less water and power, but also the buildings should be such that users consume less water and power.

Speaking at the inaugural ceremony of the Green Building Congress, 2004, here on Friday, Dr. Reddy said that he would ask the Roads and Buildings and Municipal Administration departments to work with CII to develop such a code.

The CII recently opened its Green Business Centre in Hyderabad, which is rated among the most environment-friendly buildings in the world.

Resource conservation

He spoke about the damage to the environment caused by human actions and said that every effort should be made to encourage conservation of natural resources, water and energy. Jamshyd N. Godrej, Chairman of the CII-Godrej Green Business Centre, said that the Green Building movement was part of CII's efforts to make Indian industry more competitive.

He said that Green Buildings, by saving on energy and water costs and increasing productivity of the workforce directly, adds to the competitiveness and profitability of a company. Parasuraman R., Chairman of the Indian Green Building Council, said that lack of certified green products, processes and services was hampering the growth of the green building movement in India. He said that an India specific green rating system for buildings was being worked out.
