Partly cloudy day ahead

NEW DELHI AUG. 27. The weatherman has forecast a partly cloudy sky in the Capital on Saturday. The maximum and minimum temperatures recorded on Friday at Safdarjung were 34.2 degrees Celsius and 25.8 degrees Celsius respectively. At Palam, the maximum and minimum temperatures were 33.8 degrees Celsius and 26.3 degrees Celsius respectively.

The maximum humidity at Safdarjung and Palam was 91 per cent and 95 per cent, respectively, while the minimum humidity at the two places was recorded at 61 per cent and 62 per cent, respectively.

Labourers killed

NEW DELHI AUG. 27. Two labourers were killed and five others injured when a dumper ran over them at Moti Bagh in South-West Delhi early this morning.

According to the police, the speeding dumper was going from Moti Bagh crossing towards Dhaula Kuan when it first hit the stationary truck near the gurdwara and ran over seven labourers who were repairing the road nearby. Even then the dumper driver could not stop it and the vehicle hit a tempo before ramming into an electric pole. The vehicle came to a halt after having broken the boundary wall of the gurdwara.

The injured were rushed to Safdarjung Hospital where one of them was declared dead. He was identified as Pramod Mukhia. The other labourer, Jitender, succumbed to his injuries sometime later. The dumper driver, meanwhile, fled from the scene.

The police have registered a case of causing death due to rash and negligent driving and launched a hunt for the erring driver.

Arrested for gambling

NEW DELHI AUG. 27. Five people, who were allegedly gambling at Nand Nagri in North-East Delhi, were arrested by the Crime Branch on Thursday. The police seized Rs. 23,000 of betting amount from them.

The accused were later identified as Mansoor Alam, Rakesh, Afak, Amirul Haq and Sameem. During interrogation, they disclosed that they were gambling for the past several months. The betting rates used to be conveyed from Mumbai via some agents operating in the Walled City. Further investigations into the case

Man held for murder

NEW DELHI AUG. 27. A person wanted in a murder case in Jharkhand was arrested from Meethapur Extension in South Delhi on Wednesday.

The police received a tip-off that Riazuddin, who owed allegiance to one Nazim Miyan gang of Jharkhand, had been seen in the Badarpur area. Subsequently, they mounted raids and arrested the suspect.

During interrogation, he confessed to his involvement in cases of murder, robbery and dacoity. He further disclosed that he was planning to rob a cable operator while on his way to a bank to submit money on Thursday.

Mobile tax collection van

NEW DELHI AUG. 27. On request from the residents welfare association, the first mobile van of the Municipal Corporation of Delhi to collect property tax visited Mayur Vihar in East Delhi today. As many as 78 residents deposited their house tax. A senior MCD official said their total collection was about Rs. 84,000. The official said such mobile vans would be sent to the colonies across the Capital on demand from the RWAs.
