Olympic Games
Prayers go in vain
By Our Staff Reporter
KOTTAYAM,
AUG. 27.
She carried the hopes of a nation, but in the event, Anju Bobby George's personal best of 6.83m was not good enough to land India a medal in the long jump event of the 2004 Olympics on Friday night.
Prayers were the order of the day and the nation came to a standstill, as it were, as India's last medal hope took the field. Her native Kerala was no different. The `Kochuparambil House' in Cheeranchira, Changanassery, wore a festive look with the media, both print and electronic, thronging her house in anticipation.
Tension was apparent as Anju's father, K.J. Markose, brother Ajit and mother Gracy Markose found solace in prayer at the local parish church. For the family members, the day began with the Holy mass at St. Aadayi's Jacobite Syrian Church in Nalunnakal.
However, the prayers and supplications went in vain as Anju went out of medal contention by 12.15 a.m. on Saturday.
