BANGALORE, AUG. 27. A 60-year-old woman, Mumtaz Khanum, was doused with petrol and set on fire allegedly by her son-in-law and his four brothers in Kumaraswamy Layout police station limits on Wednesday night. She died in a hospital early on Friday. The police said Khanum's daughter, Jamsheeda, married Shabbir of Hassan 10 years ago. Following a quarrel with her husband, Jamsheeda returned to her mother's house at Kanakanagar here recently. The police said that on Wednesday, Shabbir and his brothers, Nayaz, Khaleel, Shakeel, and Zameel, came to Khanum's house and asked her to send Jamsheeda with them. The four brothers were angered by some words used by Khanum. They allegedly doused her with petrol and set her on fire, the police said. Khanum, who was admitted to Victoria Hospital, died around 1 a.m. on Friday. The Kumaraswamy Layout police have registered a case.
Youth attacked
A five-member gang chased and attacked Ashok (24) with swords and machetes near Ayyappa Temple in Sriramapuram police station limits around 1 p.m. on Friday. The police said Ashok, a resident of Seshadripuram Pipeline, suffered injuries on the head and chest. He has been admitted to K.C. General Hospital and his condition is said to be critical. The Srirampuram police have registered a case and are on the lookout for Chandra, Raghu, Rajanna, and two others who allegedly attacked Ashok.
Student stabbed
Dennison (32) of Korea was stabbed with a broken beer bottle following a drunken brawl at a bar on Challaghatta Road in Airport police station limits on Thursday night. The police said Dennison, a student of an engineering college here, had been to a bar with his friends. After consuming liquor, the friends quarrelled and Dennison was stabbed, the police said. He has been admitted in Manipal Hospital and is said to be out of danger. The Airport police have registered a case.
