Ministry will be expanded soon, says Vilasrao Deshmukh

By Our Special Correspondent

BANGALORE, AUG. 28. The General Secretary of the All India Congress Committee (AICC) in charge of the State, Vilasrao Deshmukh, has said that parties in the coalition Government cannot dictate terms to one another and set deadlines for the expansion of the Ministry headed by the Chief Minister, N. Dharam Singh.

Addressing presspersons at the Congress Bhavan here on Saturday, Mr. Deshmukh said the problems between the two partners would be solved after the expansion of the 12-member Ministry soon.

However, the date had not been finalised.

Stating that problems in coalition governments were natural, the Congress leader said they could be solved amicably through talks.

He said the coalition Government in Maharashtra faced many problems in the past four-and-a-half years. But the Chief Minister, Sushil Kumar Shinde, had successfully led the Government.

The list of ministerial candidates was ready. "Neither can we ask the Janata Dal (Secular) nor can they ask us who will be accommodated in the Ministry," he said. Mr. Deshmukh said the heads of boards and corporations in the State would be asked to resign after the Ministry expansion.

He held discussions with the Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC) office-bearers on various issues. He also met party workers and listened to their grievances.

Victim

Mr. Deshmukh said the former Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister, Uma Bharti, who was remanded in judicial custody a few days ago, was a victim of squabbles within the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in Madhya Pradesh.

The BJP leaders planned to remove Ms. Bharti from the post of Chief Minister. They made use of the non-bailable warrant issued by a Hubli court against her in connection with the incidents that took place during an agitation at the Idagh Maidan in Hubli in 1994, he alleged.

On the BJP's allegation that the Congress President, Sonia Gandhi, had pressured the Dharam Singh Government to reopen the case, Mr. Deshmukh said there was no truth in it.
