Editor of Marathi daily attacked

By Our Special Correspondent

MUMBAI, AUG. 28. Nikhil Wagle, editor of the Marathi eveninger, Mahanagar, and two other journalists, were attacked, allegedly by Shiv Sainiks, early today at Malvan in Sindhudurg district.

An attempt was made to blacken his face and beat him up along with journalists Yuvraj Mohite and Pramod Nigudkar.

Police said Mr. Wagle had made some statements against the Leader of the Opposition in the Maharashtra Assembly, Narayan Rane. Over 200 people gathered at the police station today where Mr. Wagle had gone to file a complaint and tried to threaten him while he was addressing the media.

Mr. Mohite told The Hindu that they were badly injured in the attack.

Police said several Congress and Sena members gathered in various parts of the town after the incident.

Mr. Wagle and the two journalists sat in protest at the police station, refusing any treatment till the culprits were arrested. Senior police officials assured them that action would be taken.

Stabbing case

Only recently Sajid Rashid, editor of the Hindi eveninger, Hamara Mahanagar, was stabbed near his office on August 24 by two persons. He is recovering in hospital now.

Organisations such as the Yuva Bharat, the Avhan Natya Manch, the Bombay Union of Journalists and the Media for the People have condemned the attacks on journalists. Some union members would stage a demonstration on Monday.

Communalism Combat, in a statement, said that Urdu Times was carrying out a hate campaign against Mr. Rashid for his stand on the triple `talaq' issue.

Mr. Rashid is a member of Muslims for Secular Democracy that has been demanding an end to the practice of triple `talaq.'
